Chiropractor Timothy Dembowski: Hello and welcome to Spinal Aid, Atlanta’s number one
franchised spinal decompression facility. I’m Doctor Timothy Dembowski, and I am going to talk a little about a new medical breakthrough, non-surgical spinal decompression.

Statistics show that 8 out of 10 people will suffer from neck and back pain at some point in their life. For many years those who suffer form the debilitating effects of bulging and herniated discs, sciatica, stenosis, and spinal degeneration and arthritis have had little to no alternative to surgery; that is until now.

This painless spinal decompression procedure, illustrated here, starts off with the chriopractor strapping a two-piece harness onto the patient.  The chiropractor then has the patient rest against a spinal decompression table that is slowly lowered down.

As soon as the patient is lying flat, the chiropractor adjusts the harness straps. The harness is then connected to the bottom and top of the spinal decompression table. A pillow is put under the patient’s head, and the patient’s knees are raised by placing a wedge beneath them. Patients are often so relaxed on the spinal decompression table that they fall asleep during the painless procedure.

The spinal decompression strap connecting with the body harness is angled to adjust a particular vertebral level. The strap connects to a computer-controlled mechanism that is continually loosed and tightened, gradually pulling on the spine to add space between the vertebrae. The result is the damaged spinal disc is repaired.

Neck pain is relieved on another spinal decompression table that works with a harness designed for the neck region. A patient typically spends about 20 minutes on both of the spinal decompression tables.

Following treatment the chiropractor removes the spinal decompression straps connecting the harness to the table and machine. He also removes leg wedge, pillow, and then raises the table to return the patient to a standing position. The harness is removed completing the spinal decompression
treatment.

Here in our midtown Atlanta facility we have sucessfully saved over 250 patients from under going surgery, a number we are very proud of. This revolutionary back pain therapy is based on alleviating pressure on the delicate tissues that surround the spine, include the spinal discs. Most spinal disc problems are either felt in the neck or low back and here at Spinal Aid Atlanta we treat both with great success.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic adjustment

To help patients who are seeking pain relief, Atlanta chiropractic doctor Dembowski may use spinal adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, to adjust the spine into better alignment to correct any subluxations or dysfunctions of the vertebrae.

Restoring spinal structural integrity through chiropractic adjustment can improve your health by reducing pressure on sensitive nerves. Pain is reduced when nerves are not impaired by bones that are out of alignment.

The spine is not the only area that the skilled hands of a chiropractor can adjust. The neck, shoulder, the head’s alignment with the spine, elbow, wrist, knee and leg joints can benefit from chiropractic manipulation.

Sometimes a popping sound is heard when a bone or joint is adjusted to a better position, because a bubble of gas is released from the joint, like when you crack your knuckles. Rarely does the patient experience any pain when the adjustment is performed. Often the patient feels relief immediately.

History of Chiropractic

Hippocrates, the father of medicine who was born in 470 B.C., wrote “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”

Another doctor of the time, Herodotus, was renowned for manipulating a patient’s spine to cure disease.

At the end of the 19th century, when Daniel David Palmer came on the health care scene, medicine was leaving an era of proclaimed cure-alls to pursue more scientific investigation into the treatment of disease.

D.D. reasoned that the body had an ample supply of natural healing power transmitted through the nervous system. If a single organ was sick, it must not be receiving its normal nerve supply. That led to the premise of spinal misalignment, or subluxation, and from there to a procedure for adjusting the vertebrae.

D.D. performed his first adjustments in 1895, relieving one man of deafness and another person of heart trouble. Arrangements were made to train others in the application of the chiropractic principle. The Palmer School and Cure was founded in 1897 and was later incorporated under the laws of Iowa. The school later became the Palmer School of Chiropractic.

“I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebrae, but I do claim to be the first person to replace displaced vertebrae by using the spinous and transverse processes as levers…and to develop the philosophy and science of chiropractic adjustments.” D.D. Palmer, Discoverer of Chiropractic.

New Hope For Chronic Back Pain Sufferers

by Atlanta Chiropractic Doctor Timothy Dembowski

reprinted from Physician News Update, Winter 2008

A doctor from Atlanta is using a new medical breakthrough to relieve chronic back pain.

For lower back pain caused by over-exertion, strain or sprain injuries; treatments such as chiropractic, medications and injections may bring relief. But for those suffering from chronic and more severe back pain, there has been little rescue – until now. Dr. Timothy Dembowski, D.C. has recently brought a revolutionary back pain treatment to Atlanta: the revolutionary procedure is known as Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

A new medical breakthrough, spinal decompression specializes in treating lower back pain from disc bulges and hernias, sciatica, stenosis, degenerative discs, arthritis or facet syndrome.

It was discovered that the effects of spinal decompression relieved back pain and increased the height of the disc. This led to the development of this new technology, allowing us to rescue those with chronic back pain.

“For years, we’ve seen patients suffer despite multiple opinions and therapies. I’m thrilled to be able to alleviate my patients’ back pain with this new state-of-the-art treatment,” says Dr. Dembowski, D.C.

This non-surgical procedure is ideal for those with clinically unstable lower backs, who have tried medication unsuccessfully or have been scheduled for lengthy or alternative therapies. In fact, clinical studies have even shown spinal decompression is effective on patients scheduled for surgery or for those who unfortunately have already had surgery – and it failed them.

Dr. Dembowski D.C. continues, “the procedure is non-surgical, drug and needle-free and I’m excited to bring it to Atlanta.”

Shocking News About Back Surgery

The most common procedure for herniated spinal discs up to now has been surgery. Yet, a report in the New England Journal of Medicine states that “51% of all back surgery is unnecessary.”

Decompression therapy has provided relief for many patients suffering from the lack pain of herniated invertebrate discs, sciatica and stenosis.

Dr. Dembowski, D.C. responds, “as a doctor, I err of the side of skepticism, especially of anything with such profound miraculous achievement, but the majority of patients recover in a very short period of time with no documented side effects.”

How It Works

Non-surgical spinal decompression creates a negative pressure inside the disc, which draws in any bulging or herniated material, like suction. This stimulates the body to undergo a process known as “fibroblast activity,” producing fresh new tissues and cells. These new cells attach themselves to torn fibers of the disc that cause its contents to bulge. In essence, it’s like a bone healing. When complete, it is stronger than before.

Upper Back Pain Cause

Upper back pain relief

Upper back pain relief

Upper back pain is typically caused by myofascial pain (muscular irritation) or a problem with the joins in the upper spine.

Dysfunction in the joints where the ribs join the upper back spine can result in upper back pain.

Sometimes when a spinal disc that cushions the bones in the upper spine bulges out of shape, it can press on a nerve and cause upper back pain, although this condition is rare in the upper back spine (thoracic spine) and is more common in the lower back.

The more typical causes of upper back pain are:

  • Poor posture. People who sit slumped for long periods of time, such as while working at a computer, can develop upper back pain.
  • Repetitive motion at work can strain the muscles and upper back spine.
  • Injury from strains, sports, and auto accidents can cause upper back pain.

Chiropractic Treatment For Upper Back Pain

Atlanta chiropractic doctor Timothy Dembowski will recommend the right pain relief treatment for upper back pain after examining you.

Chiropractic-Back-Pain-Hands
Chiropractic treatment for upper back pain can include the following:

  • Spinal manipulation by your chiropractic doctor can realign the spinal bones and the joints where the upper back spine joins ribs.
  • Cold laser therapy uses a low power laser to treat areas experiencing upper back pain, stimulating cell growth and cell regeneration.
  • Chiropractic adjusting with instruments where the chiropractor uses the Adjustor or Percussor to manipulate your spine and joints.
  • Acupuncture with meridan therapy can relieve upper back pain. Meridian therapy is acupuncture without the use of penetrating needles. Electronic stimulation, laser beam, or pressure massage triggers the release of naturally occurring painkilling molecules called peptides and keeps the body’s normal flow of energy unblocked.
  • Spinal decompression with the DRX9000™ is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure treating upper back pain caused by disc herniations and degenerative disc disease.

Lower Back Pain Cause

As people age, bone strength and muscle elasticity and tone tend to decrease. The discs begin to lose fluid and flexibility, which decreases their ability to cushion the vertebrae.

Lower back pain can occur when, for example, someone lifts something too heavy or over stretches, causing a sprain, strain, or spasm in one of the muscles or ligaments in the back. If the spine becomes overly strained or compressed, a disc may rupture or bulge outward.

Ruptured-Spinal-DiscThis rupture may put pressure on one of the more than 50 nerves rooted to the spinal cord that control body movements and transmit signals from the body to the brain. When these nerve roots become compressed or irritated, lower back pain results.

Lower back pain may reflect nerve or muscle irritation or bone lesions. Most lower back pain follows injury or trauma to the back, but pain may also be caused by degenerative conditions such as arthritis or disc disease, osteoporosis or other bone diseases, viral infections, irritation to joints and discs, or congenital abnormalities in the spine.

Obesity, smoking, weight gain during pregnancy, stress, poor physical condition, posture inappropriate for the activity being performed, and poor sleeping position also may contribute to lower back pain.

Additionally, scar tissue created when the injured back heals itself does not have the strength or flexibility of normal tissue. Buildup of scar tissue from repeated injuries eventually weakens the back and can lead to more serious injury.

Occasionally, lower back pain may indicate a more serious medical problem. Pain accompanied by fever or loss of bowel or bladder control, pain when coughing, and progressive weakness in the legs may indicate a pinched nerve or other serious condition. People with diabetes may have severe lower back pain or pain radiating down the leg related to neuropathy. People with these symptoms should contact a doctor immediately to help prevent permanent damage.

Lower Back Pain Relief

Back pain

Back pain

You should visit Atlanta chiropractor Timothy Dembowski when you have acute lower back pain lasting over three days that doesn’t respond to self-care, or chronic lower back pain lasting over three months. You should also seek chiropractic help if you experience lower back pain following an injury or auto accident.

Chiropractic Treatment For Lower Back Pain

Depending on the diagnosis of your lower back pain by chiropractor Dembowski, he may recommend a chiropractic treatment including:

  • Spinal Decompression with the DRX9000™ is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure treating lower back pain caused by disc herniations and degenerative disc disease.
  • Cold Laser therapy uses a low power laser to treat areas experiencing lower back pain, stimulating cell growth and cell regeneration.
  • Chiropractic adjusting with instruments where the chiropractor uses the Adjustor or Percussor to manipulate your spine and joints.
  • Spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustment is literally a “hands-on” approach in which your chiropractic doctor uses leverage and a series of exercises to adjust spinal structures and restore back mobility.
  • Acupuncture with meridan therapy can relieve lower back pain. Meridian therapy is acupuncture without the use of penetrating needles. Electronic stimulation, laser beam, or pressure massage triggers the release of naturally occurring painkilling molecules called peptides and keeps the body’s normal flow of energy unblocked.

Other Treatments For Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain sufferers may get back pain relief with self-care treatments including ice and heat, rest, and exercise.

Although ice and heat (the use of cold and hot compresses) have never been scientifically proven to quickly resolve lower back pain injury, compresses may help reduce pain and inflammation and allow greater mobility for some individuals. As soon as possible following trauma, patients should apply a cold pack or a cold compress (such as a bag of ice or bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel) to the tender spot several times a day for up to 20 minutes. After 2 to 3 days of cold treatment, they should then apply heat (such as a heating lamp or hot pad) for brief periods to relax muscles and increase blood flow. Warm baths may also help relax muscles. Patients should avoid sleeping on a heating pad, which can cause burns and lead to additional tissue damage.

Bed rest — 1–2 days at most. A 1996 Finnish study found that persons who continued their activities without bed rest following onset of lower back pain appeared to have better back flexibility than those who rested in bed for a week. Other studies suggest that bed rest alone may make lower back pain worse and can lead to secondary complications such as depression, decreased muscle tone, and blood clots in the legs. Patients should resume activities as soon as possible. At night or during rest, patients should lie on one side, with a pillow between the knees (or try resting on the back and putting a pillow beneath the knees).

Exercise may be the most effective way to speed recovery from lower back pain and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles. Maintaining and building muscle strength is particularly important for persons with skeletal irregularities. Your chiropractor can provide a list of gentle exercises that help keep muscles moving and speed the recovery process. A routine of back-healthy activities may include stretching exercises, swimming, walking, and movement therapy to improve coordination and develop proper posture and muscle balance. Yoga is another way to gently stretch muscles and ease pain. Any mild discomfort felt at the start of these exercises should disappear as muscles become stronger. But if pain is more than mild and lasts more than 15 minutes during exercise, patients should stop exercising and contact the chiropractor.

Spinal Decompression

One of our two spinal decompression machines

One of our two spinal decompression machines

The DRX9000™ is a computer-controlled spinal decompression treatment that gently applies non-surgical decompression to your spine to provide back pain relief. As your spine is stretched, intradiscal pressure is reduced and nerves and discs are decompressed.

Spinal Decompression creates a vacuum effect within discs to make any herniated or bulging disc return to its normal shape, so it no longer presses on nerves causing back pain. Spinal decompression also stimulates induction of nutrients and oxygen necessary for healing by increasing circulation into the spinal discs and joints, further helping to reduce back pain.

Atlanta chiropractic doctor Timothy Dembowski uses spinal decompression to provide back pain relief to patients suffering from lower back pain, upper back pain, and neck pain.
